How to check if a car’s mileage is genuine

Published on February 4, 2024

The mileage of a vehicle plays a crucial role in determining its worth in the market, with higher mileage typically leading to a lower market value. Unfortunately, some people falsify the reading to get a better price when selling their vehicle. Follow this simple checklist when you’re buying a used car to avoid getting trapped.

1. Check the service history and MOT records

Every car has to have an MOT check yearly, and a service check at least every 2 years. Ask to see their documents as these should list the mileage at every check. Look for a consistent progression in mileage over the years. Any discrepancies or sudden drops in the recorded mileage could be a red flag.

2. Obtain a vehicle history report

In the UK, you can obtain a vehicle history report (often referred to as a car data check) from several reputable providers. These reports can give you detailed information about a vehicle’s history, including its mileage. There are both free and paid versions depending on how comprehensive you want the information to be. Some of the more well-known providers are:

  1. HPI Check
  2. RAC
  3. DVLA

While not as comprehensive as the services above, the DVLA website allows you to check certain aspects of a vehicle’s history for free, such as MOT history and basic vehicle details.

3. Do a physical inspection of the car

Check the car for signs of excessive wear that don’t match the stated mileage. Look at the steering wheel, pedal rubbers, gear knob, and driver’s seat for wear. High wear in these areas with a low mileage could indicate tampering.

4. Examine the Odometer

Check the odometer for signs of tampering. Look for misaligned numbers, scratches, or fingerprints inside the instrument panel, which might suggest the odometer has been interfered with.

5. Compare with Similar Models

Compare the mileage with similar models and age. If the car’s mileage is significantly lower than average for its age and model, it warrants closer inspection.

6. Consult a Professional Mechanic

A professional mechanic can inspect the car for signs of wear and tear that should correspond to the stated mileage. They may notice things that a layperson might miss.

9. Trace the Car’s History Online

Sometimes, previous advertisements for the car can be found, showing the mileage at earlier points in time. This can help you piece together a mileage timeline. You may also find information on the past owners through the service history documents or a paid vehicle check. If possible, contact the previous owners to confirm the mileage at the time they sold the vehicle.
